Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing.” It stems from the ancient Vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples. Some of this knowledge was set to print a few thousand years ago, but much of it is inaccessible. In present era, the principles of ayurveda are familiar in the West countries.
According to Ayurveda, human body is a part of this universe and is likewise made up of five basic elements collectively called Panch Mahabhootas like Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The human body is made up of Bio-humours like vata, pitta, kapha; Structural tissues or Body matrix like Plasma, Blood cells, Muscular tissue, Fatty tissue, Bony tissue, Bone marrow and extractable products faeces, sweat, urine. All bio-transformations within the body occur through body channels.
As everyone has a unique fingerprint, each person has a particular pattern of energy—an individual combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics—which comprises their own constitution. This constitution is determined at conception by a number of factors and remains the same throughout one’s life.
Ayurveda identifies three basic types of energy or functional principles that are present in everyone and everything. Since there are no single words in English that convey these concepts, we use the original Sanskrit words vata, pitta and kapha. These principles can be related to the basic biology of the body.
Vata is the energy of movement which Composed of space and air Energy is required to create movement so that fluids and nutrients get to the cells, enabling the body to function. It governs breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, pulsation of the heart, and all movements in the cytoplasm and cell membranes. In balance, vata promotes creativity and flexibility. Out of balance, vata produces fear and anxiety.
Pitta is the energy of digestion or metabolism which made up of Fire and Water. Energy is also required to metabolize the nutrients in the cells. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature. In balance, pitta promotes understanding and intelligence. Out of balance, pitta arouses anger, hatred and jealousy.
Kapha is the energy of lubrication and structure which formed from earth and water. Energy is called for to lubricate and maintain the structure of the cell. Kapha is the energy that forms the body’s structure like bones, muscles, tendons and provides the “glue” that holds the cells together. Kapha supplies the water for all bodily parts and systems. It lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains immunity. In balance, kapha is expressed as love, calmness and forgiveness. Out of balance, it leads to attachment, greed and envy.
NAADI PARIKSHA”-the pulse diagnosis is the most unique parameter of Ayurvedic diagnosis to assure the human constitution (Prakruti) and status of 3 doshas – VATA, PITTA & KAPHA in the body. As well as in order to understand a person’s health accurately, we must first understand the entire physical, mental, emotional and personal make-up of an individual person. Along with Nadi Pariksha, We also requires assessment methods such as questioning like about your diet and lifestyle, medical and family/genetic history, current life trends, work and personal / marital /family relationships, observation and examination of your body.
Herbal medicine is very safe when prescribed by a competent practitioner with good medical and herbal knowledge. You start by taking the medicines every day. As treatment continues your progress is closely monitored through regular consultations. Ayurvedic doctors will alter the prescription & reduce the dosage accordingly. Since all patients & conditions are different, length of treatment can vary from few weeks to several months.
The time to heal any imbalance depends on various factors – age, type of disease, degree of severity, whether it is acute or chronic. If the disease is newly formed and is with a single dosha then Ayurveda can balance this condition very quickly. On the other hand takes longer time to restore this imbalance.
